Plaza de Mayo, Buenos Aires

Create an itinerary including Plaza de Mayo
One of the city's main squares, Plaza de Mayo has long served as a hub for protests, activism, and political activity in the capital. Originally laid out in the late 16th century, the square features palm trees, gardens, and grassy stretches, all surrounded by historical buildings. The year 1810 saw the start of the nation's revolution against Spain begin here, and you'll likely see some sort of march or rally during your visit. Do take the opportunity to inspect the white obelisk in the center, a commemoration of the country's first year of independence from Spain. Take a look at our Buenos Aires day trip planning site to schedule your visit to Plaza de Mayo and learn about what else to see and do during your holiday.

  • Beautiful square in the middle of the city with tons of history and significant buildings surrounding. It’s beautiful and clean. Mind your surroundings and the pickpockets (everywhere in BA, actually), but it’s a very nice and peaceful area to spend a good amount of time. There are many local markets and events on the surrounding streets. You’re sure to experience the full culture and feel of Buenos Aires here.
  • There is a lot of history in this plaza. It is a beautiful place to walk. Go mid day for less crowds. Many locals work in this area so traffic and uber rides get a little crazy around 4 PM. Plan to spend about 1 hour here, unless you go in the museums or a Cafe - then plan longer.
  • This is definitely a place that you need to see when you come to Buenos Aires!! However, be very mindful of your surroundings and situational awareness!! Because of the high number of tourists, you will find pick pocketed in abundance! They'll often work in groups and photograph the people who stop there as part of a tour and come back later to spend more time.
  • The Pink House is here, which has some political and cultural significance, but the views behind the plaza are what actually make this a great spot to visit. The square itself is a really neat mix of French and Spanish building with interesting intersections as well.
  • This is the central plaza location for the Argentine government and many agencies. At the Northwest corner is the Metro cathedral which is a beautiful structure and free to visit. The plaza square is surrounded by government administration buildings. With the National History Museum to the west, and the blue A Metro line endpoint farthest east. I would suggest Plaza de Mayo is a "must see" during your visit to Buenos Aires, Argentina. 😎 But keep in mind that the national history museum is closed on Monday and Tuesday. ☝🏻
