Mount Gillen
A significant site for Aboriginal Australians, Mount Gillen rewards adventurous climbers with 360-degree views of the Alice Springs Desert Park. The mountain provides the city with a prominent backdrop, easily seen and photographed from many different vantage points. Make a short stop at the foot of the mountain, where you can visit John Flynn’s Grave, a memorial to a local minister whose tireless work eventually resulted in the establishment of the famous Royal Flying Doctor Service. From there you can follow several unmarked trails to the summit, where a ridge provides a convenient lookout spot. Bring plenty of drinking water and sunscreen, and wear comfortable shoes suitable for uneven terrain. Make Mount Gillen a centerpiece of your Alice Springs vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Alice Springs attractions planner.

We finally climbed to the top, the trail itself is pretty well established, as we were told, where it forks, the right is a bit gentler than the left, but much like Rome, all roads lead to the top...

Gorgeous 360 views but not for the faint hearted!! Took around 1hr up and 40min back. Highly advise plenty of water and good hiking boots. I found finding the start of the walk very hard, it's not signed posted. This was how I went: from John Flynn's Grave cross the bridge to left of the memorial (photo 2). Take a hard right just after the bridge. Follow the riverbed (photo 1) until the path starts off the left. This was the tricky bit, the start of the path has been severely washed away and so looks like a crack in the earth, not a path (photo 4). Then just stick on the path. Note that the last few metres to the top of the mountain are a nearly vertical climb (photo 5). Best views in all of Alice, and one of the best sunrises (photo 3) I've ever seen!!

Beautiful challenging hike that starts from Flynn Memorial and goes up to the top of Mount Gillen. Amazing for sunset or sunrise

As many have said, not for the faint hearted however the hike itself is perfectly safe and good fun. It’s a scramble to the top for the last 20/25metres and can seem very daunting for inexperienced climbers but well worth the rewards. Take water and good boots with decent grip as rocks get slippery, definitely wouldn’t recommend climbing during or immediately after rain.

Walk starts from Flynn's Grave Carpark. It's a really good walk to the top that's just challenging. The trail is not maintained but is well worn and busy during the winter when we went. It's a must do walk when you're in Alice Springs!

Climbed Mount Gillen 2 days in a row!!! Can seem daunting but the climb is worth it!!! Ends up being fun & the view over Alice Springs & around is amazing! all photos are my own.
