Create an itinerary including Perth Observatory
Perth Observatory has served WA in astronomy, time-keeping, and global positioning for over 120 years and remains actively involved in public education through school day tours and night-sky tours for the public. The observatory was entered on the State’s Heritage Register in 2005 and has been recognized for its scientific, cultural, and historical significance, including co-discovering the rings of Uranus. Activities include star viewing nights, daytime guided tours, astrophotography workshops, public lectures, special events, schools program, remote astronomy field nights, private parties, and weddings. The observatory is open for guided tours and visits to the museum, shop, and bushland grounds, where you will encounter historical clocks and telescopes dating back over 100 years and an iron meteorite that is one of the oldest, fastest, and most traveled objects in the Milky Way. A range of modern and historical telescopes are used to explore the southern hemisphere skies, with volunteers providing a guide to the array of planets, galaxies, nebulae, and globular clusters on display. Bookings are essential--please check the website for seasonal availability and timings. • We did the night skies tour and absolutely loved it. The tour guides are all volunteers and are so informative. The service they provide is amazing and we cannot wait to return to the observatory...

  • Such an amazing place! I’m embarrassed to say I should’ve visited here ages ago. The night star-display was so much fun; learned heaps about the constellations & planets too. Def fun for a night out as a birthday/ catch-up group or for the whole family ✨🌙🪐
  • Great family outing in the hills. Affordable and enjoyable. Volunteers are very welcoming and full of knowledge and history of the Observatory. Granted 400k per year for the next 4 years, thanks to our State Government, to hopefully inspire students from all over
  • Fantastic experience. We visited and joined the Perth Winter Nights tour. Doors opened at 7 and we could take a look around the museum and gift shop. Tour started at 730 with the volunteer guides walking us through the museum before we headed up to the domes where we viewed several celestial objects.. Really amazing experience.. Look out for the Emu in the sky! Unfortunately I don't have more pictures.. Would have loved to take some at the domes, but it was dark (can't see stars if it isn't dark!) and the phone light would kill my night vision 😅
  • The volunteers are always willing to share their knowledge and show you the grounds and telescopes. Tour the museum for some great history of WA's commitment to Astronomy and the space race.
  • Absolutely loved the Halloween 🎃 star gazing adventure, despite being lightly cloudy we still saw Saturn, Jupiter, and Venus. The volunteer staff were very helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly. Can't wait to use my cloudy night discount for a return visit. Some young kids in my group had audibly awesome night! Thanks to all the volunteers again!!
