Lake St. Clair was formed ages ago by glaciation and is part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. The lake forms the southern access for the Cradle Mountain National Park, which is noted for its many hiking trails, such as the well-known Overland trail. This trail, 65 kilometers (40 mi) long, runs through an area of wild landscapes, ancient rain forests, and diverse animal habitats.
