The Don River Railway is a volunteer-run vintage railway and museum in Don, a suburb of Devonport, Tasmania. It runs a passenger train ride from Don to Coles Beach (operationally known as Don Junction) and return. The current line follows a reconstructed section of the former Melrose line that ran between Don Junction and Paloona. For Don River Railway and beyond, use our Devonport trip planning website to get the most from your Devonport vacation.
The Don River Railway is open from Saturday to Thursday, closing only for Christmas Day, Good Friday, and ANZAC Day. On weekdays customers can expect to ride in a 1940s ex Tasmanian Government Railways rail car and trailer, DP22 and PT3. On weekend operations a heritage carriage set is hauled by either a steam locomotive or a vintage diesel locomotive.

We enjoyed the museum and the train trip it was disappointing that there was no steam train rides the day we were there- make sure you don't miss the fully restored carriage in the museum

The actual “train ride” itself is very short (7km in total there & back), it passes through scrubby country next to the Don River (tidal). Good for those with kids who have a short attention span...

Absolutely loved my visit. I adore Engines and trains . We travelled on the train which was wonderful and all the volunteers were so happy and helpful. The history and workmanship is truly amazing . The shed is something to behold ( everyone loves a good shed and this one is massive) There is a little shop to get a drink and crisps . Just a really special place with beautiful Engines and Rolling stock ♥️ thankyou for a wonderful day .

Love the cute historical site with all amazing types of trains and railway items on display. Can go up to the platform control or the workshop to explore all the fancy royal and first class carriages. The train ride was very calming and relaxing too, highly recommended!

Fun and educational for adults and kids. Heaos of old trains waiting for restoration and a few restored to mint condition. I hope the coffee is work next time we come! Well worth an hour or two for a visit!

Visited again on my recent trip, this time took a trip on the diesel rail car. Was fantastic as always and had a fantastic chat to the driver. Also visited in 2019 (no trains due to fire danger) and 2021 (steam train trip, flipping fantastic).

Lovely visit to the Don river railway. We went on the 10am train journey. Great for big and little kids. The train yards and displays were fantastic and loved the royal carriage restoration.
