Create an itinerary including Hyde Park Barracks
At Hyde Park Barracks, learn about the arrival of the prisoners who constituted the First Fleets from England. Convict architect Francis Greenway designed the building in the 19th century to house inmates. Today, the square Georgian structure is a museum displaying the barrack's history. View the large murals that line its corridors and show the convicts' offences, which resulted in deportation to Australia. Hyde Park Barracks is on the Unesco World Heritage list as an Australian convict site. For travelers who use our international travel planner, Sydney holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Hyde Park Barracks and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • A must to do in Sydney!!! A UNESCO World Heritage-listed site in the heart of historic Sydney, Hyde Park Barracks is one of the most significant convict sites in the world. It is an extraordinary living record of early colonial Australia. Easy access via public transport and 12$ entry fee for adults. If you are visiting Sydney, this should be on top of your list. Highly recommended!!!
  • Very interesting museum for all ages. My 10 years old kid loved it! A lot of interactivity and multimedia, stories and facts about the history, fantastic soundtracks. At the entrance you get the audio guide and 1.5 hours just fly! Highly recommend for local and tourist. History of Australia!
  • Great place to visit. One of the Sydney living museums, describing Sydney history from the first colonists days. The exhibition is very informative and easy to navigate with the audio guide provided at the entrance. Very kids friendly.
  • It was really good to see and hear about the history of the building. One of our convicts stayed here in the early 1800's, as did some of the Bounty Women.
  • A great place to learn Australian history. Must borrow the audio guide. Very smart guided tour to guide you to walk around and listen to the stories.
