Have a picnic on Shark Island, a small recreation reserve that boasts panoramic views of the Sydney Harbor. Take a ferry to the islet, 1.5 hectares (3.7 acres) in area and named for its shark-like shape. Enjoy the scenic vista of the city skyline, take a relaxing walk, and view the lighthouse on the island's northern tip. Facilities on the island include restrooms and picnic tables, but no restaurants, so bring enough food and water. Use our Sydney tour itinerary planner to visit Shark Island on your trip to Sydney, and learn what else travelers and our writers recommend seeing nearby.

Well worth a visit and possibly during Winter when it is quieter. Nothing to do on the island other than to relax and soak up the rays and scenery.

Come here on a weekday and you'll probably be the only person on the island - and you'll have your very own personal view of the most beautiful harbour on earth. Would love to keep this place a secret but it's also too beautiful not to share. There are torrlets on the island, but definitely bring your own food and drinks. And please, for the love of God, DO NOT COME BAREFOOT. Made that mistake once and my feet still haven't forgiven me (there are loads of bindii's). Also, don't forget to pay your 'landing fee' 😉

Not at all the Greg Norman of Islands, Shark Island aint no major runner up/choker...it really makes a picnic sing. Accessible by $20 round trip ticket from captain Cook at wharf 6 circular quay. There's around 20 good spots to picnic in the 100mx250m Island. Not named for sharks, there's only 1 recorded case of attack, and that a few lifetimes ago. Swimmers were happy with the experience, and there's many little beached, but be warned, there's a fair bit alive in there! The views are wonderful, tree cover liberal, but last ferry is around 5pm. You can get access with your own boat, through the national parks Web site. There's the odd invasion from tours, but not enough to spoil the place.

LOVED it. We arrived at 2pm and were the only ones on the island until the final ferry back at 4. So peaceful, which is hard to find in Sydney! Excellent views of the harbour and the skyline. Take food with you and enjoy it.

Love this area. My family and I spent about an hour here one evening, and we had the whole island to ourselves. Very relaxing and beautiful place with some marine wildlife.
