Granite Island, also known by the Ramindjeri people as Nulcoowarra, is a small island next to Victor Harbor, South Australia, about 80 km south of South Australia's capital city, Adelaide. Although there are no permanent residents, there are buildings and shelters on the island, including a cafe. It is a popular tourist attraction, particularly for people wishing to see little penguins (commonly called "fairy penguins") which live there. The island also supported resident wallabies in the 1980s which captivated visiting tourists. The island is accessible across a causeway from the mainland, either on foot or by catching an antique horse-drawn tram. As of 2015, the private company Oceanic Victor intends to use the island as a departure point to ferry tourists to a new tourist attraction in adjacent waters. Tourists will be able to enter an aquaculture seacage where they will be able to swim with and hand feed southern bluefin tuna, and observe other South Australian marine species.
In 1987 a joint State and local government committee was formed "to consider improvements to Granite Island." The Committee recommended that the island's tourism potential be maximised, while protecting its environment. The Committee also specifically recommended the "protection of the fairy penguin population."
In 1989, the island's rat and rabbit populations were subjected to culling, with poison used to reduce rat numbers. Rats are known to raid the nests of little penguins. The island's wallaby population was also reduced, with animals relocated as far afield as Cummins on Eyre Peninsula. • To walk those steeper steps, you better be a very fit person. No good for kids or not fit. Views are the ones you get anywhere in coastal Australia.

  • Approximately one hour from Adelaide lies beautiful Victor Harbor, head for the town centre with plenty of parking free if you park past main carpark on the right , from there walk across the jetty...

  • Beautiful views. The breakwater was built from granite quarried from the island. There are boulders on display showing the large feldspar crystals and the different xenoliths embedded in the 503 million year old coarse granite. For entertainment, we watched thrill seeking visitors stepping on the flat rock on the breakwater to get drenched (pictured)
  • Beautiful island to explore. Easy walk over to the island or catch a horse drawn tram for a fee. The walking tracks are not to difficult.
  • Gotta love the walk to the island and the tram ride (horse) back to the harbour. It's a solid walk and the view of the island from the top and the view from the island are both amazing
  • I’ve been to Granite Island more times than I can count but it never grows old. It’s often windy. The walk around the island is a decent workout. Beautiful views to be seen all around. It’s a nice walk getting over from Victor harbour or there’s the option of sitting on the horse drawn cart which is $15 per person one way. Haven’t spotted a penguin here in many years. Used to see them a lot around 30 years ago.
  • Beautiful place with a spectacular view over the islands. Worth the hike
