A famous monastic site, Melk Abbey contains the remains of several members of the first Austrian dynasty and the tomb of St. Coloman of Stockerau. This Benedictine abbey was founded in 1089, although the current Baroque building was built between 1702 and 1736. You can take time to appreciate the abbey's frescos by Johann Michael Rottmayr and browse the library of medieval manuscripts. Located above the town with a view of the Danube, the abbey is surrounded by a large park. Join a guided tour to learn about the abbey's history as a school for young monks. The Melk Abbey is a must visit in this part of Austria. The public parts of the Abbey can be visited by yourself or in a guided tour that takes you through an exhibition, some state rooms, the impressive library, a terrace and the magnificent church. The exhibition gives information about the order and the abbey in a very thoughtful presentation. The staff is friendly and efficient. The buildings are a marvellous example of baroque architecture at its finest. You can also walk around some very pretty court yards and well maintained period gardens. The entire complex and visitor’s approach is incredibly efficient. There is also a good restaurant on site.

An truly amazing Abbey. The location is perfect, on top of a hill making it looking more beautiful, big and marvelous. It's difficult to explain with words it's majesty. I would really highly recommend visiting it and the ticket costs only 13€ including the beautiful garden, a gorgeous Library including an stunning view from the balcony.

Visiting this abbey with a river cruise. A beautiful newly renovated entrance garden. Going in with a guided tour, the interior was amazing. The museum showed you some rare artifacts of the abbey. The library contained some of the oldest manuscripts in Europe. Amazingly it is still active and books could be borrowed with permission. The church was spectacularly decorated. It is still an active abbey with 20+ monks. It is also a private school with ~900 students. There is also a paranomia view terrace up top the entrance tower above the gift shop. Do not miss it as the view is spectacular. The visit was amazing and well worth.

Melk Abbey is one of our stop from our Viking Grand European Tour last August 2022. As part of the Viking package we were transported by bus to this magnificent Benedictine Abbey which was founded in 1809. Before entering the main entrance you will find beautifully manicured trees with fountain that makes it quite enjoyable to walk through. The facade of the building is impressive but the interior is even more magnificent. Taking pictures is not allowed inside the abbey so just enjoy the experience if you happen to visit this place.

I liked walking around. There, unlike other churches in Vienna, you can enter and be impressed by the beauty and grandeur of the church for free. There is a museum there, since we did not pay to enter. The view from the garden area is really beautiful. It is pleasant to walk around. There is also a shop where we bought souvenirs and wine.
