In the village of Chukur Gabala are the remnants of ancient Gabala (not to be confused with modern Gabala), a city dating back 2,500 years which was once the capital of the ancient kingdom of Caucasian Albania. It was discovered in 1959 by an Azerbaijani archaeologist and what you can see today is a large field with various excavated sections showing paths, dwellings, pipes and pottery, plus the now-crumbling twin towers that were the main entrance to the fortified city. Old Gabala was invaded multiple times by the likes of Tamerlane and Nadir Shah and eventually disappeared in the 18th century. Visit the nearby Gabala Archaeological Center too to browse a large collection of artifacts and learn more about it.
