Watch mud bubbling out of the earth at Mud Volcanoes, strange geological formations bursting warm liquid set against a backdrop of mountains in Gobustan National Park. There's more than 400 mud volcanoes in Azerbaijan, home to the world's greatest concentration of mud volcanoes. Fizzy, snorting bubbles and an occasional sound of snoring make a mesmerizing spectacle. The gurgling mud coming out at 1.2 m (4 ft) high spurts like mini volcanoes but is not hot to the touch. The landscape features cracked mud and piles of hardened mud spewing muddy water. Mud Volcanoes is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our , online itinerary creator Edition.

  • As others have said it's a 15 min taxi from the main road in a car more suited to the poor road. It was really windy when I visited and climb the mini volcanoes with care.

  • The drive in was an experience, we were in a Lada taxi that our guide had organized. It was fast and bumpy, I was happy with my sports bra. We arrived at the mud volcanoes on one of the windiest days....  more

  • We did this after the rock carvings self-driving in a small Kia rental car. Lots of grief saying we needed to transfer to a Lada taxi as the road was not driveable in a small car. Utter nonsense...

  • Very beautiful and unique experience. Active mud volcanoes. Methane gas pushes out the mud from underneath the earth. There are small ones and then there is a big one (extra taxi charge) nearby, a must see. In the big mud volcano, people take a dive in summer and it is supposed to be good for the skin because of the natural minerals. Also a large water pond that has methane gas bubbles is at a walking distance from the big mud volcano. After a visit to the Gobustan museum, we went south on the highway to a nearby roundabout and our tour guide hired a taxi for 15 manat, then paid 10 manat extra for the big volcano. The old Russian taxi took us off the road thru bumpy dirt road ride for about 20 minutes. Enjoy the beautiful landscape of the mountains and the roller coaster ride. A very unique experience. Loved it.
  • Must visit place. Take four wheel vehicle to visit larger volcanoes. Adventure trip
  • So this is a bit off the beaten track. You can easily drive here though. Most cars should be able to make it if you go slow. Trucks will have zero issues. Otherwise park at the closest roundabout and hire a Soviet era taxi. Once here prepare to get a bit dirty. You are going to want to touch the mud and your kids are definitely going to touch the mud. If you are like us and you get up close you will end up with a mud shower from an eruption if you aren't careful. It's very windy so good audio on video is hard to shoot. Pictures are plentiful and the landscape looks lunar in nature. Enjoy the visit!
  • It is hard to find because there are no signs, but if you look at Google satellite view, you can see the dirt road of off the Western side of Alat. It is inaccessible when it is rainy, and it's quite a hike up a mountain if a car won't take you. However, you are rewarded with a very unique place!
  • Yeeey! Muuuud! There is no better sightseeing than mud volcanos :) In real there is nothing to see, but you can make a couple of cool pictures
