In the past Sheki hosted a bustling silk industry and caravanserais were built to accommodate traders and travellers, their goods and animals. Two remain in the city today, however at the moment only one of them can be visited. This caravanserai, the so-called Upper Caravanserai, has functioned as a hotel since the late 1980s and offers one of the most unique stays in the Caucasus which is also very affordable. The rooms have been fashioned from the old stoned-walled cells with arched wooden doors used by old travellers. Even if you're not staying it's worth having a look around and visiting the onsite teahouse for a Silk Road tea experience.     Lots of history, easy to find and it's free to enter. A friend pointed out fossils in the stones on a wall. Part of the complex has been converted to a hotel.

    This is now a hotel and well renovated. Worth a visit but not on the same scale as other caravansary we have visited.
