The Curtius Museum is a museum of archaeology and decorative arts, located on the bank of the Meuse River in Liège, classified as a Major Heritage of Wallonia. It was built sometime between 1597 and 1610 as a private mansion for Jean Curtius, industrialist and munitions supplier to the Spanish army. With its alternating layers of red brick and natural stone, and its cross-mullioned windows, the building typifies the regional style known as the Mosan Renaissance. After a 50 million euro redevelopment, the museum reopened as the Grand Curtius in March 2009, now housing the merged collections of four former museums: the museum of archeology, the museum of weaponry, the museum of decorative arts, and the museum of religious art and Mosan art. Highlights in the collections include treasures of Mosan art such as a twelfth-century gilded reliquary tryptich, formerly in the church of Sainte-Croix, the Evangelarium of Notger, sculptures by Jean Del Cour, and a portrait of Napoleon Bonaparte painted by Ingres in 1804: Bonaparte, First Consul. Nice exhibition, beautiful building with modern extensions. Management does a lot of efforts to explain and show past and present history.

Wonderful exhibits. If you aren’t French, you won’t be able to understand what you are seeing, but it’s still worth a look. I spent three hours there.

The entrance was a little tricky to find due to construction. The price was phenomenal! Staff was very friendly and showed a lot of patience with language barriers. Don't expect staff to be fluent in English! The arms museum was absolutely fascinating. All expositions have descriptions in French and English.

The Curtius Museum is a little like a local history museum with a collection worthy of a national museum. The glass collection is very special with some beautiful examples of St. Lambert and Art Nouveau glassworks. The collection of Napoleonic era clocks, the wood and stone religious sculptures are also worth a long visit. It's a pity there's very little English in the description of the exhibits. Normally I'd remove one star, but I so enjoyed the museum, I'll let this one pass.

#Liège #Museum #GrandCurtius Very complete museum where you can see from Paleolithic archeological remains to a very complete collection of weaponry, and other historical artpieces linked to Liège and surrounds. The visit takes around 2 hours

Absolutely worth a visit. A lot to see, so save at least 3 hrs. Probably not suitable for children under 10.
