Admire the diversity of graves and peaceful surroundings of General Cemetery, a tranquil and ornate cemetery that shelters the graves of many of Bolivia's important political figures. This vast cemetery has countless graves, from massive mausoleums to small headstones, often decorated in colorful and personal ways with photos of the departed, offerings, and memorabilia. Stroll under the shade of tall trees lining the walkways, and pause for a break on one of the benches dotted around. Vendors outside the cemetery sell snacks and beverages, and you'll likely notice locals spending time walking the grounds, talking, drinking coffee, or simply reading a book. For travelers who use our world travel planner, Sucre holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the General Cemetery and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

It seems like a park more than a cemetary. It is a good to spend a few hours here. If you went with a tour guide It would be even more interesting.

A very impressive and big cemetery near the city centre (20 minutes going from the central square). Note that families often visit the place, especially on sundays.

Nice relaxing place. Birds and nice gardens. Take bus 4 to the palace and the way back take the same bus to the cementerio.

Entrance is free, we got a local guide for 35 bolivianos and he explained all the important people and history around the cemetery (it was about 30 mins long). It is a beautiful, well maintained and clean cemetery. Our guide said it is the first and only cemetery declared a UNESCO world heritage site. I’m not sure if that’s true but I can see why! Highly recommended.

We were told by locals to visit their cemetery. For a Portuguese it is just like any cemetery in Portugal, but if you come from another country you might find it interesting. It is very well kept, has a lot of big trees and shade, more than Simon Bolívar Park. You can also see how social stratification is reflected even at death. A lot of people are in walls and other in family structures richly decorated. Visiting a cemetery is always a way to understand a culture. Take a micro from centeal are for BOB1,5, it takes 10min. Or else just walk uphill a little bit which is also nice, it takes 25min.

When my Spanish teacher and I were tired of walking she picked this cemetery because she knew it was a quiet and peaceful place to continue our lesson. It's the nicest cemetery I've ever been in and I didn't feel uncomfortable being there because they hold a different regard for the dead and this cemetery was treated like a park.

I’d recommend a visit to this cemetery for a couple of reasons. First, it is interesting to see how Bolivian people take care of the deceased and use all kind of objects to honour the bond they feel. Second, as a green spot the cemetery surpasses the Parque Simon Bolivar. Third, it’s a nice and quiet refuge from the busy city center of Sucre.
