Fine calligraphy citing texts from the Koran decorates the interior of Banya Bashi Mosque. The great Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan, who also built the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, designed this building in 1576. It is the only remaining example of a domed roof on a cubic base in Bulgaria. Examine the aquamarine tiles covering the eastern wall, and look for a large tile with an image of the Kaaba, the most sacred place for Muslims. The building lies next to natural thermal spas, and steam rises from vents in the ground near the mosque walls. Visitors are welcome outside of prayer times. Take your shoes off when you enter. • As a non-Muslim woman I was allowed inside with a head covering and without shoes. Lovely inside. Very pretty mosque in the centre of town.

  • Friendly locals are really happy to take you through the rules. Obviously be aware you will need to take off shoes and cover your head, legs and arms if you're a woman but apart from that, it's...

  • Such a Peaceful place to reduce stress and anxiety. Just by being there you feel more peace. If you visit the mosque 🕌 kindly don't forget to remove your shoes and for women to cover up as a respect to the place and religion. It's as beautiful from the inside as the outside. Every one is welcome to go inside and sit and listen to the prayers or just to feel more spiritual. Too bad it's the only mosque left in Sofia since world War 2, I would've loved to see more from the ottoman empire.
  • Situated in the center of town, Banya Bashi Mosque is a Muslim religious structure that was built during the long period of Ottoman rule in Bulgaria. It probably sits on top of the much older ruins of ancient Sofia. The mosque is not large and is open to the public, but mostly the faithful are in attendance.
  • Peaceful place located in the city center near the Sofia statue. There is a wonderful garden with a fountain behind it. The interior of the mosque is also beautiful.
  • Oldest and currently the only functioning mosque in Sofia, Bulgaria. It’s a reminder of 500 year rule of Muslims in this region. It’s well maintained. Visitors are welcome however no information leaflets or guide to show them or enlighten them about this historic piece of art and architecture.
  • Banya Bashi Mosque (Bulgarian: Баня баши джамия, Banya bashi dzhamiya; Turkish: Banya Başı Camii) is a mosque in Sofia, built by the architect and civil engineer Mimar Sinan. Its construction was completed in 1566, during the years the Ottomans had control of the city. The mosque derives its name from the phrase Banya Bashi, which means many baths. The most outstanding feature of the mosque is that it was actually built over natural thermal spas; one can even see the steam rising from vents in the ground near the mosque walls. The mosque is famous for its large dome, diameter 15m, and the minaret
