In 1925, Bulgarian communists arranged an assassination attempt on Tsar Boris III and bombed Catedral de Sveta-Nedelya, killing 150 people and destroying most of the church. A plaque outside commemorates the event. When you enter, note the well-preserved, 19th-century wood-carved iconostasis. The light from the windows of the central dome falls on the church's gold-and-blue murals. The name of the church translates to Holy (or Saint) Sunday, though it originally may have referred to the young martyr St. Kyriaki or even to Jesus Christ. The church is very popular for traditional Sunday weddings. You can light a candle here and pray if you choose. Beautiful place. Definitely worth a visit. Lovely calming, friendly atmosphere. Friendly ‘staff’. You have to pay to take photos, but very cheap.
