Create an itinerary including Angkor Thom
Angkor Thom features the epic remains of the last "great city" of the Khmer Empire. Founded in the 12th century by King Jayavarman VII, the city was a true administrative, military, and religious center of the kingdom. The wooden structures have long collapsed, but the stone walls, five gates, and terraces adorned with elaborate carvings still remain, with some portions completely restored--such as the popular south gate. To approach this gate you need to walk through a moat between two rows of statues holding the seven-headed Naga (giant serpent)--symbolizing the passage from the world of people to the world of goods. A Buddhist temple sited at the center inside the walls represents the connection between heaven and earth. Do not miss the terrace decorated with elephant carvings where royal parties took place. PutAngkor Thom into our Siem Reap trip planner and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • The size of it is very impressive and you can’t fail to love the smiling Buddha faces everywhere. Bayon is awesome, don’t miss bapheon. The climb up and the view are lovely.

  • Beautiful place worth at least a few minutes of relaxing and appreciation. Surrounded with mature and peace (when there’s no cars or bikes)
  • What's a beautiful ancient gate ! Very fond of love with this stunning view with very serenely atmosphere compared to other gates around Angkor Thom.
  • The North Gate where you can climb up on the right side of the gate to get nice pics.
  • Very peaceful here in the morning. I love the trees surounding the gate and the people passing by this ancient old century gate, it felt like travel back in time to 13th century when this gate was built.
  • Very cool to see the gate, and the milk churning in front.
