Cape Bonavista Lighthouse
A striking sight on the coast of Newfoundland, Cape Bonavista Lighthouse attracts visitors with its history as the fourth oldest lighthouse in the easterly province and for its vibrantly painted exterior. Operating from 1843 until 1962, the lighthouse now invites visitors to experience the life of a provincial lighthouse keeper. Steadily climb the tall stone tower and witness one of the few locations in the world where you can still see the seal oil fuelled light apparatus used throughout the nineteenth century, along with beautiful panoramic views off the coast. Downstairs, a series of displays and artefacts tell the tale of the local industry, as well as presenting the ecological history of Cape Boavista. Lighthouse was nice to look at, but it was the puffins that amazed us. They fly from point A to B quickly, land amongst the hundreds of puffins, and are off again. We could have watched for hours...

Beautiful lighthouse at all points of the day (we went both at sunrise and sunset), but what captures our attention more were the incredible jagged rock faces. You've got rocky hills to climb over to watch the sun come up and go down and a beautiful view of the ocean waves crashing onto the impressive cliff-like shoreline. There is some parking on-site and an interpretation center that we didn't get to visit (due to the hours we went). Great for the whole family, but be aware that the open edges of the cliff side are open with no barriers - so take caution with pets and children.

Truly one of the highlights of our trip to Newfoundland. This lighthouse is so well preserved and taken care of by its caretakers, that it really feels like you are walking inside of a time capsule. Even the original record book that was filled out by its original keepers is on its desk intact. The gift shop is quite nice and is very reasonably priced, with many locally made products. Bring cash though, because the debit/credit machines were down when we visited.

Such a beautiful place with spectacular views. You can see Puffins when the are here (not in October), but when it's out of season pretty much everything is closed but you get the whole place mostly to yourself.

Walked the cape trail almost 2 hours. Easy but awesome. Waves crashing against the rocks. Saw the light house and john cabots statue.watched the sunset.
-
Fantastic view. One of the best lighthouse and an informative tour! There is a puffin colony on the rock not far from the Cape.
