See the summertime retreat of the Roosevelt family, and discover the charms of the place FDR referred to as the 'beloved island' at Roosevelt Campobello International Park. Now a park administered jointly by Canada and the United States, the retreat's focal point remains the summer cottage where Franklin D Roosevelt and his family spent their holidays before he became the 32nd President of the United States. The cottage now contains a museum dedicated to the President, First Lady, and their family, with many rooms remodeled to look as they did in the early 20th century. The surrounding 1,134 ha (2,800 acre) park offers a wealth of walking routes, forestland, headlands, and beaches. For travelers who use our world travel planner, Campobello Island holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Roosevelt Campobello International Park and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • A special place indeed. An "international park" as they call it, although you must be in Canada for visit. The site of President Roosevelt's summer cottage and area he met his wife. When we went the visitors center had just closed, but the staff were extremely helpful in going back inside unprompted and providing us with maps and assistance. They went the extra mile and made our brief trip well worth it. The cottage itself seems marvelous. There are views looking out to Eastport, Maine which seems so close you could cast a stone to it's shores. The trails make for lovely strolls. Worth a visit.
  • Campobello is a friendly quiet beautiful place. My wife and I spent the day on the island with our dogs. If you're into hiking, there's plenty to do. You can drive to most of the site seeing places. Go there!
  • This is a special place, both for it's beauty and the history. Our second visit, with friends who were there for the first time. The buildings are in fine shape, the grounds are lovely and peaceful. The highlight is tea with Eleanor, don't miss it. Fine hiking in the park well worth your time.
  • Very well preserved summer home of the Roosevelt family. The tour is a MUST. It provides intimate details of the historic moments this family dealt with. A nice tea to learn about Eleanor and what a strong leader she was, too.
  • What a magical junction of Canadian and American history! The size and beauty of this park (and Campobello Island as a whole) is stunning. The staff here were so friendly and the tour was well worth the time. Lots of history to discover throughout the park, and a great set of walking trails on top of it all. Well worth a visit!
