Create an itinerary including Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump World Heritage Site
Visit the World Heritage Site of Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump World Heritage Site, which preserves a prehistoric custom of the native people that inhabited the plains. Situated in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, the buffalo jump is a cliff used by the Blackfoot tribe to hunt and kill bison. Herding them over the cliff edge, the hunters let the animals fall to their death, dragging them afterwards to a butchering site. Visit the cliff and the interpretive center, and see exhibits about the history and culture of the tribes. To plan Fort Macleod vacation without wasting time, ask Klarna Trips to design an itinerary.

  • Really interesting historical and cultural site with artifact, Films, educational displays and a walk to the jump. This year there was no cafe which was unfortunate. The gift shop could be much better in terms of variety of items available too. Guided tours would be a good option if someone wanted to pay extra for that. As a local, I would suggest adding new attractions each year like concerts, guest speakers, interactive theatre, touring cultural displays like museums do. It is a must-see for travelers passing through and locals if you haven’t visited it. The stories and layout are very good. You can also save $ using your CF1 card.
  • I visited Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump World Heritage Site on a weekday in early July and sent several enjoyable hours there. This was such a worthwhile place to stop. The interpretive centre's displays and films were first rate! The lower trails outside were easy to follow and navigate. Coming across a pair of Yellow Bellied Marmots sunning themselves on a rock was a real bonus. One marmot took off but one curious fellow stuck around for quite awhile as long as I kept perfectly still and kept my distance.. MY post would not be complete without sharing some flowers too. This wild rose grew very close to the ground and the petals are paler than the bush variety. The hill side bushes were mostly Saskatoons and chokecherries and they were loaded with berries just waiting to ripen.
  • Great experience. Lots of information and a better understanding of indigenous people's in the area over thousands of years. The interactive displays and movies fully explained process of Buffalo jumps, which I didn't know before. Highly recommend stopping in. Takes a good couple hours to take it all in.
  • A cool name and the UNESCO designation made us want to visit as we were passing by on Highway 2. There is only one main spot to view the “jump” and you are unable to walk on top of it. You can walk the lower trail to get a view from below, free guide at the visitor’s centre. The museum was pretty basic but should be fine for kids. It only takes 30 minutes to an hour depending on how carefully you read the informational exhibits. Do note that there is a $15/adult admission fee!
  • Knowledge gain: 🐃🐃🐃🐃🐃 Price: 💰 Gift shop: 💔( closed) Cafeteria: 💔 (closed) Envr.: 🦦🦦🦦🦦🦦 Stupid humans make mistakes repeatedly. But, luckily, most people learn from it to avoid history repeating itself! This is an extremely precious cultural relic archaeological site! Visiting this historic site, Aboriginal people once again share the wisdom of their ancestors and their value to life. In the end, I just want to say... be kind, grateful for the source of the food, thanks for our Mother Earth. Learn the good thing from each other. Let's be Canadians that our children and grandchildren can be proud of. Also, thank you for reading this.
