The Tablelands
Walk along the Earth's mantle at World Heritage Site The Tablelands, a rare opportunity experienced by few. Forged when the tectonic plates of Africa and North America collided, this breathtaking scenery is a dramatic composition of deep ocean crust, rocks from the Earth's mantle, and eroded remnants of a 1.2 billion year old mountain range. Hike along golden rocky plains, absorbing this dynamic terrain and spectacular views from various lookouts. Various trails allow walkers of all abilities to encounter the site, and daily guides from the national park provide a wealth of geological information. Make The Tablelands a part of your Gros Morne National Park vacation plans using our Gros Morne National Park road trip planning website.

Both the 4km return short trail and the unmarked 14km hike to the top loop trail are amazing. Choose either one based on your mobility and weather condition and you won't regret it! The view is magnificent and the experience is unique. The hike to the top trail is quite dangerous, I'd suggest to have hiking companions and pay attention to the weather. We also found GPS based hiking apps quite useful to locate us on the official unmarked trail (e.g. park Canada app or something like Strava). Be sure to visit discovery center (preferably before the hike), not only it gives a lot of information on Tablelands, it also give the difference in rock composition between other regions of gros morne which we found very informative.

Wow! Wow! Wow! What a cool place. It’s so hard to comprehend what we are seeing and interacting with. The trail to the look out is a nice general slope that most anyone can do. There are benches along the way for anyone who may need a rest.

We hiked the Table Lands in Gros Morne Park. A very unique area where the earths mantle has been pushed to the surface. There is a “Mars” like appearance and very little vegetation because of the peridotite rock. It has a toxic quality with few nutrients for plant life.

A great place to hike for a unique visual appearance. The hike is quite easy, and the end of the official trail there is a fast moving stream of water. Other hikers do venture off the trail to reach the snowy parts, but those parts aren't well travelled so hike with caution. Make sure to take pictures going in as it is completely different from the surrounding landscape.

This was a very unique place and is like a must visit for once. So much to learn here about history.
