Create an itinerary including Chateau Ramezay Historic Site and Museum of Montreal
Originally built in 1705 as the residence of a former Montreal governor, Chateau Ramezay Historic Site and Museum of Montreal now stands as a historic building and educational museum. The building has offered refuge to important figures in volatile times, including the Continental Army when Montreal was seized, and Benjamin Franklin as he endeavored to raise troops in the American Revolutionary War. As the area's oldest private history museum, and a National Historic Site, it is no surprise the structure has filled with thousands of vintage items. Browse through about 30,000 objects, including manuscripts, artworks, and furniture dating up to the 20th century. Take the time to explore the garden, a wonderful display of 18th century landscaping. • Beautiful garden and exterior. Almost the entire ground floor has been renovated and isn’t staged as a house so it doesn’t really have the same charm. The basement is probably the best part as it’s actually staged. Many of the audio devices were out of order. Still worth the visit in my opinion as the basement and gardens are lovely. The gift shop has some really nice items, not standard gift shop stuff but they have jewellery and pottery instead.
  • Well worth a visit. I did expect more original interior layouts but it is more of a museum with displays. Very informative and educational. Perfect for a tourist not from the area who wants to learn about one of the founding families of Toronto.
  • If you are into Montreal history you are in the right place. The rooms are filled with information and audio to help you understand the history. The only thing that would make it better is being a bit interactive and have stuff that could be interesting for kids. It is not that big and lighting is not the best.
  • We enjoyed this museum but there are certainly areas that could be improved for future visits. For example, the lighting is very dim, making it hard to read the very small print on the curatorial notes, which were riddled with spelling mistakes. The museum is not particularly interactive and the iPads were out of order on most of the exhibits. That said, the museum itself has interesting content that speaks to Montreal's history and the history of Canada. There is a strong focus on Indigenous peoples and the Inuit as well as the arctic expedition which seems irrelevant to the Chateau itself but it was still fun and interesting to learn about. I would recommend this museum for first-timers but I personally would not visit a second time.
  • Nice place in the middle of Montreal, free gardens to mimic the old times French gardens. There's a guided tour which is free to ticket buyers and is recommended.
