Create an itinerary including Royal Battery
Enjoy the sweeping views over St. Lawrence River at Royal Battery. The dozen or so canons are part of a vast city ramparts named in honor of King Louis XIV. The bastion was built in the shape of a semicircle by a 17th-century governor Louis de Buade de Frontenac immediately after the British siege to better ensure the defense of Quebec. Note that climbing the bastion can be strenuous to older people. Plan to see Royal Battery and other attractions that appeal to you using our Quebec City online trip itinerary builder.

  • This is essentially a battery of old cannons facing the sea and bay. It is a short walk from the funicular. Near the berthing place of the cruise liners. Can be a bit slippery. Nice historic place...

  • A place that you can see the " Royal Battery" has been a very important fort to protect the city . A good place for over looking the St. Lawrence River !
  • Nice little spot to view the water, see some cannons, have your coffee. A cite picture frame with a bench where you can see the Chateau Frontenac behind.
  • So impressive at night. You can look at the city view at night and enjoy the scenery
  • One of the only accessible batteries in the old town. Historic signs around. Well maintained and perfectly restored. Visit during high tide and you can see the water rushing in. A quiet place to relax and enjoy the scenery.
  • I and others have raised that Google needs to do a better job with plaques and historical markers. For example, to the north along Rue de la Barricade are several plaques that put on full display how proud the Canadians are at having defeated Generals Arnold and Montgomery in their doomed invasion of Quebec yet they are not on the map here. At least the Royal Battery is (and I've included some pictures of the plaques as there is no where to put them in the correct location). So if you are a history buff, walk a little north and visit Rue de la Barricade and see them in person.
