Create an itinerary including Metropolitan Cathedral (Catedral Metropolitana)
Built over a period of five decades from 1748 to 1800, Metropolitan Cathedral (Catedral Metropolitana) was a long time in the making but, for those who appreciate spectacular architecture, worth every stone. The Spanish cathedral still serves as the center of the archdiocese of Santiago de Chile, and as the seat of the region's archbishop. The cathedral's twin spires, which used to tower imposingly over the city, now stand in the shadow of modern buildings--the cavernous interior still impresses. Admire the intricate frescoes adorning the roof, thousands of black and white tiles forming a pattern on the floor, and the stark, austere crypts. • I enjoyed our visit and esp. liked the tiled floors with a great pattern. Other than that, I felt the church was not as impressive and others I have visited in Mexico.

  • Located on the edge of plaza Armas, stands this ornate Cathedral, created by Gioacchino Toesca, built in the late 1700's, the facade is very striking, the interior is huge, definitely worth a visit.

  • Well worth coming back when they were open to walk through and appreciate the beauty of the design and architecture. The cathedral is at the northwest corner of Plaza de Armas in the heart of Santiago. The walking street that runs north from the cathedral also has many local vendors and is a market street. Fascinating to see what types of items are being bought and sold there. This public place is always crowded with lots of locals and other foreign tourists. Lots of music and festivities also. Come and check it out. Beauty area to relax on a beautiful Chilean summer day. 😎🙏🏻
  • Amazing cathedral with a spectacular interior. Definitely worth a walk around to drink in the beautiful details.
  • We were walking around town on New Years Day, and this was one of our stops. It’s in the government district, and the large plaza had a lot of traffic. We didn’t see any problems, but there were a lot of refugees in the plaza, and we had the feeling of being watched by some for possibly pickpocketing, so we did not stay long.
  • Very nice old cathedral located within Plaza de Armas, a very historic cathedral that has been around since 1800. It has a very rich history considering how old it is
  • Gorgeous building on the outside but truly spectacular on the inside. Definitely worth a visit regardless of religion.
