Museo de la Memoria y los Derechos Humanos, Santiago

4.6
#2 of 224 in Museums in Chile
Create an itinerary including Museo de la Memoria y los Derechos Humanos
Poignant, sobering, and politically charged, Museo de la Memoria y los Derechos Humanos explores the human rights violations perpetrated by Chile's former dictator, Augusto Pinochet. During his 17-year reign between 1973 and 1990, Pinochet executed thousands of Chileans, tortured tens of thousands more, and forced up to 200,000 into exile. The museum cleverly compares his government's atrocities with others still happening around the world today, through a chronological and multisensory experience. Consider renting an English audio guide, as many of the signs are only in Spanish. Put Museo de la Memoria y los Derechos Humanos at the forefront of your travel plans using our Santiago planner.

  • Wow, it was amazing to see the history of Chile. Such interesting information and so impactful. The wall of pictures was especially impactful, and so sad. I love that you can light a candle for specific people on the wall or in the database. Such an amazing place for remembering what happened and grieving those lost.
  • A very well put together museum that tells the tale of the time of the dictatorship in Chile and the victims of it. The museum is visually pleasing while still giving off an environment of memory and mourning.
  • There was a lot of interesting artifacts, documents, and story about this very disturbing time in Chilean history. The audio for English is an application for your smartphone. Worked great, free wifi to download and use it. Our issue was the layout, organization, and presentation. There are indicators on the floor for a suggested path through the museum. They are not very well placed and you tend to get lost and double back. They need to visit the Epic museum in Dublin for an idea of how to organize and direct. The displays have little numbered audio symbols but they do not correspond to the English audio app. You have no way to know which or the 45 pages/audio clips correspond to where you are in the museum. I ended up just listening to them and reading as I walked around with nothing in sync…
  • Such a disappointment, I was so looking forward to experiencing this museum. Unless you speak Spanish it's difficult to navigate and the staff are fairly reluctant to help. It looks fantastic just very limited access for non Spanish speakers.
  • A free museum documenting the historical struggles for human rights. But lots of Socialist 🇻🇳 and left wing propaganda bias throughout the museum. Seems that the left can never tell the story of history without a biased narrative and agenda being injected. 😔 You would think all South Americans would have learned an incredibly valuable lesson from the collapse of Venezuela due to the support of insane government welfare ideology, but Brazil (in their recent election) just proved that they didn't learn anything from the fall of Venezuela. It's probably worth a walk through to see the museum but, like Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, many of these types of facilities are indoctrination camps intended to paint freedom and capitalism with a dark brush. Take what you read and see with a grain of salt and keep in mind... Socialism is PURE Satanism 🇨🇳🇨🇳🇨🇳
