The Putuo Zongcheng Temple of Chengde, Hebei province, China is a Qing dynasty era Buddhist temple complex built between 1767 and 1771, during the reign of the Qianlong Emperor (1735–1796). It is located near the Chengde Mountain Resort, which is south of the Putuo Zongcheng. Along with the equally famed Puning Temple, it is one of the Eight Outer Temples of Chengde. The temple was modeled after the Potala Palace of Tibet, the old sanctuary of the Dalai Lama built a century earlier. Since it was modeled after the Potala palace, the temple represents a fusion of Chinese and Tibetan architectural styles. The temple complex covers a surface area of some 220,000m2, making it one of the largest in China. Many of its halls and pavilions are adorned with copper and gold tiled roofs, adding to the splendor of the site.HistoryThe Putuo Zongcheng Temple is part of the "Eight Outer Temples" located in Chengde, which are part of the World Heritage List along with the Chengde Mountain Resort. These temples were administered by the Lifan Yuan, an administrative department for the affairs of ethnic minorities such as the Mongolians and Tibetans, hence the different combinations of architectural style which could be seen throughout these Eight Outer Temples in Chengde.

  • This is a relic of an emperor's whim. It is not a religious place and the decoration is more Chinese than Tibetan. Go to Tibet to see the real one. I did not see much enthusiasm amongst the visitors.

  • Buying a ticket to here also gives you access to the temple slightly to the east of here. This temple was built to Tibetan Buddhism traditions on the outside but the inside is more Han Chinese style. Mongolian and Dzungarian chieftains were met here because their style of buddhism is also Tibetan. Going up and down takes 1 hour. If you want to go with a guide, it'll take 2 hours. This place and Puning Temple are the two best temples in the 8 outer temples.
  • We have visited the Mountain Resort, Putuo Zongcheng (Potala Palace) Temple and Puning Si Temple in Chengde and for me this one was the best of all. The temple is large, complex and very pleasant. While climbing to the top it always seems like there is already an end coming, but then you discover a new building, room, place or staircase leading further up and find something new and unexpected on the way. Really recommended!
  • The Putuo Zongcheng monastery was built by Emperor Qianlong to accomodate visits by the Dalai Lama of Tibet. Be prepared to climb many stairs to see great views and to see fascinating views of the interior.
  • Absolutely Stunning!
  • Supposed to be designed like the Potala in Tibet. Very steep steps
