Create an itinerary including Ghost City of Fengdu
Witness the Chinese vision of afterlife at Ghost City of Fengdu, nearly two thousand years old and merging influences and teachings of Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism. Legend has it that two imperial court officials, Yin and Wang--the combination of their names coining the phrase "the king of hell"--came to the mountains to practice Taoism and became immortal. Observe the demonic images depicting life in hell, and walk over a bridge that connects the underworld with this world and separates virtuous from sinners--the latter ones are supposed to fall into the pools below the bridge. Other ghostly attractions include a torturing pass fronted by statues of fierce demons and a palace with a large stone in front of its gate--a good person will manage to stand on it with one foot in the air for three minutes, while a bad person won't. • The temple at the top is authentic while some of the other structures were rebuilt. Interesting to see the difference, even though the rebuilt structures are no less impressive.

  • Such a unique experience! Loved it! However, try to go outside of a national holiday or you will be stuck in traffic for hours!!

  • Interesting and quite beautiful. Lots of stairs, but we got the chair lift which gave a nice view of the city. Not far off the ground , so not scary at all. You do have to be quick getting on and off as the carriages don’t stop, but there are people helping you and opening and shutting doors. Can be very noisy with tourist groups here as they all use loud speaker earphones and that can be quite deafening. Tourist photo shoot going over the bridge, but you do not have to buy the photo. As usual, souvenir shops and some where to buy a drink and ice cream. Very clean toilets.
  • I've been here in 04.2015, it was nice and beautiful for the time being. Very quiet and really well made place, one of the best of its kind.
  • Hi there, me and my lovely guests visited this sacred temple as a stop destination during our trip along Yangzte River. this place has many Westerners come to see . because it very strange to them and they can learn more about "after die life " in hell
  • It's a neat place to learn a little more about Taoist and Buddhist beliefs. The temple complex is actually a replica of the original, which was sadly razed during the Cultural Revolution. So although most of it dates back to only the last 10-20 years, it does faithfully recreate what was here before. The only original piece is the Lord of the Netherworld, 'cause even when following the Chairman's orders, the locals weren't stupid. The place is made up of a series of different temples, all fulfilling various purposes in Taoism and Buddhism. There are also a few allegorical tests for spirits that you can do, with varying levels of touristy knick-knacks accompanying them. The temple or shrine to the king of the underworld is active though, and you can participate if you want or just observe. But while I was there a fair few faithful came to pay their respects via an interesting tradition-they took bamboo passports with seals made from cinnabar ink, offered them to the lord, then had them ritualistically burned outside. There are limited bathroom opportunities and only snacks and bottled drinks available, so if you're not on a Yangtze River Cruise, make sure you bring supplies.
  • The only place in China where there's a temple for Hades. A good place to visit to learn about ancient Chinese legends. Comes free as well if you're on the cruise
