Create an itinerary including Tiger Leaping Gorge (Hutiao Xia)
One of the deepest gorges in the world, Tiger Leaping Gorge (Hutiao Xia) separates two ranges and ranks as a top choice for independent hikers in China. Walk a narrow, winding trail tenaciously clinging to the Haba Xue range, listening to the roar of the Jinsha River as it cuts even deeper into the steep slopes of the Yulong Xue range across the way. View awe-inspiring peaks with a height of 4,000-6,000 m (13,123-19,685 ft) from the gorge, which makes up part of a larger World Heritage Site noted for its ecological diversity. Walk across a sky bridge at its narrowest 30 m (66 ft) width. There is a well-marked high trail and a paved low road that can accommodate vehicles. Options include following a trail on horseback, hiking a smaller section, or trekking from one end to another (which takes two days). Put Tiger Leaping Gorge (Hutiao Xia) and other Shangri-La County attractions into our Shangri-La County day trip site, and watch your holiday take shape.

  • A place most expats in China have probably been to at some point. A truly breathtaking spot which is actually quite easily accessible. This is a hike with astonishing nature, gorgeous views and amazing scenery. It's not a particularly challenging hike either and the route is usually split over two days to make it even easier. The stay over point is aptly named 'Halfway'. If you're lucky and the sky is clear you can get amazing night sky views. Lots of animals roam around here. And the sweeping hills are awe inspiring. Before you start hiking you can check out the raging river if wish but expect tons of people. Bring cash as there's a chance you'll lose your phone signal. And a waterproof coat as the weather can turn quickly
  • A great little hike that can be done over a few days or a sa 1 day hike down to the river (Tiger Leaping Gorge). Use the 'sky ladder' when you come back up! We visited the river when it was 'calm' and it was still so powerful, god knows what it would be like when in spate? A spectacular area to visit and a must when in the region.
  • A powerful River that you can strongly feel the Mother Nature. It will be a hiking trip here. If you’re lazy, there is also the elevator choice. Quite crowded, but there’s no need to worry about the parking spot. Park your car by following the guidance, and enjoy the river. It might be the most popular spot of Jinsha River.
  • I spent 4 days hiking through here in 2012 and highly recommend it. Plenty of little homestay/hostels to stay in with resonably priced food and beverage. The hike was extremely interesting with so many different local habitates to experience along the way. Very mountainous terraine with deep valleys and very fast flowing rivers. Fortunately the hiking is quite flat as you do not need to cross any large hills.
  • Beautiful snowcapped mountains to stare in awe of, while hiking through wildflower dotted meadows, and over precarious cliffsides. Extra care must be taken while hiking here, as some passes have become dangerous due to rock slides and erosion. The skyladder is just what your inner adrenaline junkie might be seeking, as if some of the narrow walkways aside a steep descent towards certain death aren't already enough. 😅
