Explore Pingjiang Road, which has been the city's center of cultural life for 800 years since the Song Dynasty. The road stretches for 1,606 m (5270 ft) parallel to the Pingjiang River and contains series of ancient sophisticated houses designed with characteristic black tiles and white walls. As you take a stroll along the historic road, visit artsy bookshops, museums, opera theaters, and especially teahouses, where locals perform Suzhou Pingtan--a form of Chinese musical narrative. You can also go on a boat ride down the Grand Canal, where traditionally dressed boaters sing their native songs. Watch for traffic, as scooters regularly whiz by close to sidewalks.
