Create an itinerary including Piedra Del Penol
Hulking over Laguna de Guatape like a mammoth, Piedra Del Penol offers incredible views and a cultural experience rolled into one. The massive, free-standing rock formed millions of years ago makes such a dramatic impact on the scenery that it was worshipped as a god by the indigenous communities. Climb 200 m (656 ft) up the dizzying spiral staircase carved into the back of the rock to enjoy what some Colombians describe as "the best view in the world." Remember your visit with a souvenir, sold by the stalls on top of the rock. PutPiedra Del Penol into our Guatape road trip website and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • Nice view, would recommend going after 2pm during weekdays, wasn’t crowded at all when we got up! Nice views, sun was out. In the morning there was some rain and much clouds. And between 11 and 1 lots of tourbusses come i guess.
  • a must-see sight in a cool town from when you’re looking at day trips from Medellin. The bus ride will take you over 2 hours. When you get to the rock, there’s about 600 steps. It took us about 10 minutes to walk to the top, and it was quite a strenuous hike. Views are worth it
  • Lovely nature with the lakes around and the climb to the top of the mountain is around 750 steps. The view is absolutely amazing from there. You could just take an uber from medelin which costs around 120K COP for a car or the piblic bus which is 25K per person.
  • We were in town Easter weekend so all of Guatape is full of people. It says it does not open until 8am. But we jumped on a larger "jeepney" style ride - bigger than tuc-tuc and people hopped in and off along the way. Was only 2500 COP each from Guatape to the bottom of the Piedra. There are tuc-tucs that can take you up to the entrance - which is a great view. We hiked up since we were early. Left Guatape 6:45am - got to the rock a little before 7am. Got to the entrance around 7:30am and there was already a line. Be sure to get your tickets at the booth to your left - then line up to enter (up the steps) to your right. Tickets are 20,000 a person. They were letting people in early and we were in before 7:45 am. It was nice and cool and breezy and not crowded. So glad we got there early. Beautiful views, very strong, well made steps, gift shops, toilets, first aid, and refreshments available at the top. I have asthma but i just took a few breaks a long the way and I made it to the top. Fabulous panoramic views of the lakes and mountains! Glad we made it! We met up with a beautifully painted tuk-tuk when we exited the gated area and he took us back to Guatape for 6000 each - 12,000 cop for the 2 of us.
  • Guatape is beautiful. Colorful, happy, artsy, with great food. El Penon: This is a tough climb and a good breakfast with plenty hydration is necessary or you will regret it. There are 2 stops getting to the top with employees checking people's vitals. As you walk up the stairs you can see it in people's faces they are struggling. Their faces are beat red and need help along the way and you can't really sit down either. The step incline is insane. After I got to the top and got my wind back, I looked out in the distance and was taken back by the view. This place has a spiritual ancient feel. It reminded me of Sedona Arizona in how peaceful and connected I was. The accomplishment of the climb made me feel like I earned the privilege to be apart of this ancient wonder. A real humbling experience. I made the most out of this day by starting with Bandeja paisa, and after the climb I tried the Trucha/trout. The total experience.
