Discover a piece of Costa Rican cloud forest at Curi Cancha Reserve. The 96 hectare (237 acre)wildlife refuge was established as a nature reserve in 1997 and serves as a scenic spot for hiking and bird-watching. Take a guided tour or set off on the trails by yourself, exploring the primary cloud forest that's sprawled with pieces of open space that make it easier to spot native animals. Roaming the trails, you might see toucans, resplendent quetzals, sloths, anteaters, howler monkeys, or capuchins. • We were hoping to see some wildlife and beautiful birds and with the help of our guide Juan, the hike did not disappoint. We were fortunate enough to actually see a Resplendent Quetzal.

  • A wonderful nature preserve with amazing biodiversity. A typical tour takes between 2 to 2.5 hours but you can go as fast or as slow as you desire. Guides are available (for an extra fee) and can make for a more rewarding experience. We walked about 60% of the trails before kids started to complain they were tired. Trails are dirt, or mud, and can be pretty steep at some points. This is a great place to visit May-December when the temperature is slightly lower and animals descend to lower elevations.
  • Gorgeous reserve teeming with wildlife. We spotted a rare ornate eagle with our guide, Johnny Loves Nature- highly recommended to help you get the most of your visit! While the entry price is a bit steep at $20 per person, we are glad to support conservation efforts and local jobs, and felt it was worthwhile for the experience. Make sure to get there midday at the latest so you’re not rushed- they close at 3:00.
  • We combined the night tour here with a natural history walk at the cloud forest reserve and must say this was really a good idea. This place is though no cloud forest, but is home to many interesting animals and birds that we could not see in the cloud forest. We saw tucan, tarantula , baby frogs, green viper, Scorpio. Our guide is 20 years in the business and super experienced. He explained a lot and told funny stories and helped us with taking photos. That is really wonderful experience we would recommend further definitely.
  • Great place to see wildlife. Do the guided tour and you will see alot more. Our guide, Jorge, was amazing. He had so much knowledge and information as well as a great personality. He helped us take excellent photos.
  • After experiencing multiple other reserves in Monteverde, this felt like birding on hard-mode. This may be the perfect place for a birding guide because we heard so many species and struggled to really nail down their exact location! Although we weren't our most successful with birds, we did see toucans (bless up to the binoculars we rented for $11) and a few cool mammals! The trails are super well kept if not a *little* confusing to follow (signage is everywhere but felt a bit off sometimes). I highly recc visiting this spot because we know there's so many amazing bird species, and it felt less crowded than other spots.
