Create an itinerary including Poas Volcano
Observe firsthand the geothermal forces that created much of Costa Rica at Poas Volcano. Located within a national park, this active stratovolcano in the central part of the country features a giant crater over 1 km (0.6 mi) in diameter. Although the last major eruption occurred back in the 1950s, on most days you can see mud and water shooting high up into the air. These minor blowouts are caused by deposits of liquid sulphur, which wreaks havoc on the surrounding ecosystem. Just south of there you can see an inactive crater filled by a lake and surrounded by lush cloud forest. Begin your visit at the wheelchair-accessible visitor center, which marks the starting point of one of the park's main trails. Wear shoes suitable for rugged terrain, and keep in mind that due to its location above the frost line, the park often experiences below-freezing temperatures. Using our custom trip planner, Poas Volcano National Park attractions like Poas Volcano can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • Beautiful views and easy trails. I did get a little winded here from the volcanic fumes, but it wasn’t terrible. Just something to be aware of if you have asthma.

  • Lucked out on a beautiful day near the Volcano and La Paz waterfalls. Crater was awesome looking. The walk up and back was pretty easy and quick.
  • Pretty nice trip from.San Jose. I recommend to visit in the morning so there is higher chance to have better view (without clouds). Count with approx 1hour for the whole visit - 10min video, 10min walk, 20min volcano, 10min walk.. even you are fast walker you cannot go by yourself but always in a group .. walking slowly :) it is pretty organized here 👌
  • Active volcano where you can go to the edge of the crater. Its allow only 50 people for 20minutes because ita still active volcano. You can park car quite near the volcano, but weather is little bit tricky. Mostly is cloudy and you nor see the crater. Still the feeling is amazing:)
  • We went here as part of a day tour and were able to see the volcano beautifully! The walk to and from the viewpoint was easy and only took a few minutes. You only have 20 minutes to stay there, but that was plenty of time to look around and take some cool pictures. I loved that they only allowed a certain number of people at one time to make sure it was not over crowded and you were able to see the volcano!
  • We came early in the morning 08:20 and enjoyed an amazing view. We didn’t have any time limit for staying near the volcano. Later we took the road back to the parking through the lagoon. Very nice view and walk - Took us about an hour to get back to the car. We got the tickets online for 15$ each and payed around 2500c for the parking. Near the parking there is a nice coffee and snacks to end the walk.
