Trip Planner: Europe / Cyprus / Limassol / Agios Tychon / Amathus
The complex of palaces, public baths, and temples at Amathus represents one of the oldest ancient towns of Cyprus. The earliest detected settlement at the site dates to the second millennium BCE, or the earliest Iron Age. Today, you can observe ruins that are linked to the Greeks, Persians, and Romans, among other ancient civilizations. Walk among millennia-old crumbling structures and gaze at pillars that once supported lavish palaces. See the former acropolis with a finely preserved monumental stone cistern. Well worth a stop. We enjoyed wandering around the ruins and seeing the sites. There is limited information about the site but the boards at the entrance tell you what you need to know. We found we could do a walk through the sites and get so close to the ruins it was brilliant. A really interesting 30 minute stop.
There is an entry fee of €2.50, which is reasonable given that there is very little information or guidance on the side. There are some noticeboards to read yourself, hard to interpret, and there is little interpretation given. Worth a visit if you are in the area anyway, but probably not worth going out of your way to see it.
Historical ruins antic city and beautiful view on the sea. I recommend to go it in the morning, because late will become too hot. Ticket costs only 2.5 euros.
Place worth seeing if it's on the way. Ruins whose history is not fully described on the spot. Nevertheless, the stone decorations on the columns look impressive.
Great place to take photos of Limassol, archeological site at the top of the hill requires a half an hour hike. Overall once you get to the top you can see everything in 10m.
