Nestled high in the rocky mountain tops overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, the ruins of Saint Hilarion Castle feature crumbling walls, Byzantine ornaments, and 100 km (60 mi) views. Although the exact construction date is unknown, the castle and a former monastery are estimated to be about 1,000 years old. Serving as a royal home with economic units, stables, and military quarters, the site survived until the Venetian arrival in the 15th century, when it was dismantled. We drove up to this spectacular historic place built into the cliff face. in places, a good few years ago and thought I would share some pictures. Some family members were not keen on the drive up due to the narrow road and the height, but it is so worth it, you will not be disappointed.

Great place steeped in history, well worth a visit most of the castle is accessible by decent steps but some parts are only good for sure footed people. Great views from the various parts. Was free when we went.

The castle is in really good condition and excellent to view. However, some sections are clearly far from finished. That doesn't ruin the rest of the castle though. It's a hard steep climb but the views are incredible.

It's quite a climb to the very top from the couch but worth it if you're fit enough. It's still a great visit even if you don't go up to the summit. Fantastic views!

Another beautiful castle in North Cyprus, you can visit the grounds for 15 TL. Didn't get a chance to go right to the top as it was a windy day as well as the fact the cabbie would only stay for about an hour. Went out of season so areas were closed off. I read that the castle in Walt Disney's Sleeping Beauty was based on this castle. Views are stunning but give yourself a few hours to visit, take sensible, comfortable, walking shoes.
