Create an itinerary including Church of Profitis Elias
With a typical orthodox interior that features biblical images on walls and ceilings, Church of Profitis Elias stands above towns and valleys overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. You'll need to climb some 150 stairs to reach this small stone church with one dome and a bell tower, built in Byzantine style. Visitors often tie a piece of cloth or a ribbon to a nearby tree, signifying a remembrance of a loved one. At the top, you'll be 100 m (330 ft) above area surroundings with expansive views of the bay bellow. Be sure to take water with you, as the climb can be tiring. • The little church at the top of the hill is beautiful but the courtyard is shockingly in need of some upkeep. It is sad that the council does not keep weeds under control, or maintain the benches etc.

  • If staying nearby, nice to visit on a cool day. There are LOTS of steps but we all managed, even the 3 year old, but I needed a breather towards the top! Great panoramic views and a cute little...

  • A magical place at sunset. And very moving with all the memory ribbons, particularly at the moment with all the covid masks 😔 There's about 150 steps from the car park (my 11 year old daugter loves counting!) but with railings and places to stop it's easily doable for most people and we'll worth the effort. Such a beautiful little church as well, the best one we've seen on the East Coast area. We'll recommended. I imagine it's also stunning at sunrise as well but that's a bit early for me!
  • Beautiful church located on top of a hill that overlooks Protaras. We received a warm welcome from the local cats after conquering the steep staircase!
  • Worth a visit. You won’t be disappoint. Great views after a small climb up the rock.
  • Nice, cosy church. A new one, built in the 20th century but according to Byzantium standards. It's on top of the hill, so you either walk up the stairs or use another (probably old) "stone ladder" climb at the back of the hill. The view from the top of the hill is spectacular.
  • Such a beautiful peaceful place for prayer and beautiful sunsets. Shame about the gardens not being cared for however, we visited this church most nights.
