Take in the view from the ramparts, see the horrors of torture chambers, and taste genuine medieval recipes at Rakvere Castle. The site of the castle has been used as a stronghold since ancient times; much of the current structure took shape in the 14th century during Danish rule and the rule of the knights of the Livonian Order. Throughout its history, the castle saw a lot of combat and changed hands on numerous occasions. Today, visitors can fully immerse themselves in a medieval atmosphere through reenactments, tours, and exhibits. Don't miss the chance to learn some traditional skills, such as marzipan making, blacksmithing, or sword fighting. Some activities and tours need to be booked in advance; you can do it online. • Medieval castle complete with torture chamber. Some of the structure has been restored but not all. The yard in the rear has been modified to accommodate festivals. Worth a stop if in the area.

  • They have games and animals for the children. The gift shop is great for kids, also. There are people dressed in period costume with crafts and demonstrations.

  • One of the best guided tours I had. The guide was very knowledgeable, with good sense of humor. Expositions in the castle are very informative and interesting. We were here with a group of school kids of 11-12 y.o. and everyone really enjoyed the tour. :) Highly recommended :)
  • Great experience!! It is a proper fort with live show of cannon being fired and different stations like archery, a sword room, torture chamber with a dark hell room! Overall a great experience for kids and adults alike. The gift shop also has cool gifts and wooden swords , axes and slings for children.
  • This place is very beautiful, it’s brings you back to 16th century and you will imagine what sort of life the people has during those times. It’s highly recommended to visit and see the old castle.
  • Very interesting to visit. Helpful guides tell about the history. Also possible to grab medieval food and drink. Possibilities to shoot at the archery range, visit torture chamber, apothecary and more. Place is family friendly and interractions can be found for everyone. At summer is also possible to attend events such as demonstration of medieval battle
  • We spent 3(!) action-packed amazing hours at Rakvere Castle, complete with medieval experiences - from cannon being shot to swordfights to trying our hand at archery & enjoying a practical lecture in alchemy. There was a handicrafts spot where kids & grownups alike can try pottery & candle-making as well as making their own coin in the smithy. In terms of food - there is a lovely cafe with a simple, affordable & tasty range of 1 soup-main-dessert. There were also stationery horses with pulleys for kids, a challenge track with swinging pillows, a giant chess board & opportunity to roam the whole castle & wall passages. Recommended to visit with kids - family ticket 22€ & all inside activities are included. Some announcements can be very loud & startle smaller visitors, but the cannon shot wasn’t as bad as the humorous warnings by the guards. Ended up buying 2 wooden swords on our way out (good prices and varying stages of ready-made) - the souvenir shop/ticket office was awesome. Staff are very welcoming & we enjoyed our experience very much - if I could give it 6 🌟, I would. Thank you!♥️
