This museum, opened in 1887, was named after Greek goddess Pallas Athena, who represents warfare and wisdom. Learn about Finnish art history from the likes of Albert Edelfelt, Akseli Gallen-Kallela, and other important Finnish artists. The site also houses works from famous foreign artists including Van Gogh, Rodin, and Cezanne, as well as Russian and Karelian pieces. We visited quite a few art galleries while on our trip to Helsinki and this was by far our favourite! It had a good variety of artwork on show with a lot of different displays.

Loved the curated exhibits on Women of Finland and by a pair of artists challenging new frontiers in photography. Other exhibitions are nice too, although a relatively small museum. Can recommend...

Amazing experience to get to know Finland through their art. Very traditional paintings but also very colorful & filled with live. It's a must here in Helsinki. They have free lockers for the ones that are backpackers like me or people who want to be more comfortable. 10/10

Unfortunately is temporary closed. The Ateneum Art Museum is home to the largest collections of classical art in Finland. The museum is home to more than 20,000 works of art, mostly by Finnish artists from the mid-18th to the mid-20th century. Some of Finland’s most cherished artworks are located here including Hugo Simbert’s gloomily symbolic The Garden of Death and Akseli Gallen-Kallela’s Boy with a Crow. The museum building dates back to 1887 and its elegant facade is adorned with statues and reliefs which contain a lot of symbols.

A beautiful art gallery close to railway station in Helsinki. It has lot of modern art exhibits spread across three floors. Free to see. Has free lockers to keep your baggage

The museum's permanent exhibition provides a comprehensive view on Finnish arts, especially painting and sculpture. The focus is obviously on the classical era but there are a few displays on modern arts as well. The architecture of the museum itself is also impressive.

Great place to see some nice art. Gaugin paintings were liberaly displayed in the collection with many Nordic artists. Of Particular interest was the Kalevala section covering the finish folklore and mythology.
