Learn more about the intriguing staircase lock The nine Locks of Fonseranes, which is made up of eight lock chambers and nine gates. The lock keeper's house, stables, and other traditional buildings still remain intact, providing a glimpse into the lock's operational past. The lock has gone through a number of alterations over the years, including an unsuccessful effort to construct an incline plane for larger boats to bypass the narrow lock. • Impressive to see boats going up 30 meters in a matter of hours. Somewhere along the canal there's a boat rental for amateurs which leads to an entertaining amount of struggling newbies. Not much to do otherwise except getting ripped off by the only restaurant there.
  • Was actually sailing the boat and it is really cool to go down it. The lock keepers guided us through it as it was our first time going through several locks at a time. If you are on foot it might be a little less entertaining but it is still worth seeing.
  • Really special place. You can walk or take a boat ride. Note that parking is 7€. There are restrooms. There is a nice coffeshop on site.
  • A half day canal trip down to and through the lock gates eventually finishing in Beziers. A great afternoon trip to see some remarkable engineering on the Canal du Midi.
  • Lovely sunny day to visit. No boat traffic today unfortunately. The visitor centre is sweet and the 12 minute "3D" film upstairs (multiple wall projection as opposed to 3D glasses) is informative, only €4 each and fun to watch.
