Create an itinerary including Escalier du Roi d'Aragon
According to legend, Escalier du Roi d'Aragon was carved from the steep cliff in a single night during Alfonso V's siege of the town in 1420. In fact, it was constructed earlier by an older Franciscan monk, who devised an easy access to the water source and the cave at the base of their monastery. The staircase leads to the sea, offering you a unique opportunity to swim at the foot of the cliffs. By boat, you can see the stairway all the way up the side of a cliff that looks like a hollow tube in the stone. You can walk the entire 187 steps, inclined at an angle of 45 degrees, overlooking the sea. To visit Escalier du Roi d'Aragon and other attractions in Bonifacio, use our Bonifacio visit planner.

  • Well worth the five euros they charge to go down. You have to put on a hardhat as there are some low hanging rocks above your head most of the way. Very steep descent so you better be prepared to go back up! There are 188 steps not all of them are equal in size some of them are pretty steep. Once you get down to the bottom there are some amazing views of the cliffs and the rocks ahead. The water is gorgeous and it’s such a serene view. The path is narrow but it’s definitely worth the trip.
  • Such a nice experience! Going down those stairs was really nice and scary at the same time time as there was some water on the stairs. The view is super nice, from the top and also when you reach down. They open at 10, I went there I the morning and was not crowded. I enjoyed taking a lot of pictures
  • Going down those stairs was a bit scary, and I did nearly get an asthma attack but hey the view is worth it! There is a nice breeze by the sea, and the view is beautiful! Careful not to slip!
  • So. There were A LOT of steep steps which would have been acceptable if they had actually led to the famed well. But unfortunately, the end part of the cliff walk was fenced off. Complete waist of 10 euros and I had to have a sit down afterwards.
  • What else can you do in a little town with lots of bars and restaurants? Walk around 387 stairs up and down! The views are great and the beer tastes double as good afterwards ;-)
