Create an itinerary including Monastere Royal de Brou
Monastere Royal de Brou is the burial place of French royalty, and the architecture of this structure recalls the ghosts of the royal personages enclosed in its crypts. You will discover an extravagant Gothic church with a mosaic tiled roof as the centerpiece of the monastic grounds. The church was commissioned in the 16th century by Maragaret of Austria, daughter of the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian. In 1922, the municipality installed an art collection in the monks' former quarters, where artwork from the 13th to the 20th century adorn the Renaissance walls.  Before you head to Bourg-en-Bresse, plan trip itinerary details with our user-friendly Bourg-en-Bresse visit planner, to make sure you see all that Bourg-en-Bresse has to offer, including Monastere Royal de Brou.

  • Magnificent is probably the term most used to describe this superb building where an incredible peace reigns, a serenity emerges from these places and makes you forget the worries of everyday life.

  • A truly beautiful monastery. The vast majority of the interior is open to visit for a small entry fee. Interactive displays and videos bring the history of this great building to life. A large collection of artworks, traditional wooden toys and intricate architecture provides a pleasure filled visit for all. Learn about the history of monarchs who resided here or see how the building was constructed and adjusted over the years. This really is the crowning jewel of any visit to Bourg-en-Bresse. A must visit.
  • A fascinating, breathtaking place to visit.
  • Well worth a visit, beautiful scenery, lots of history, very well kept and clean,
  • Very well curated church/monastery. Most of the stuff are in English. Very tourist friendly.
  • Took my breath away. The artisitic detail on the choir area, the beautiful stained glass windows (whose features included "textured" glass, making the clothes look like velevet or silk!), and the prominent paintings by famous artists, were all so fantastic. This place will delight and surprise any visitor.
