As if the pointed spires atop the carved windows weren’t romantic enough, the grounds at Chateau de Breze are also home to 29 hectares (74 acres) of vineyards. The château itself was built in the 11th century, but the only part of the structure still intact from its early days is the drawbridge. After your tour of the family home, ask to sample some of the house wines, but be careful not to drink too much before touring the fortress beneath your feet. That’s right, this castle rests on an intricate maze of tunnels that were an important component of its defense strategy in days gone by. With its steep walks and tight spaces, the underground is best toured with a clear head. Use our Breze journey builder app to arrange your visit to Chateau de Breze and other attractions in Breze.

  • Very interesting place, with lots to see underground although not so much above ground. It’s very impressive and worth a visit.

  • The unusual thing about this castle is not the above ground building, but the underground chambers. Dating from around 1060, most of the rooms and passages were built below ground before the above...

  • This was a nice chateau which has underground tunnels. Plenty of parking. We didn't go inside. It was a too hot a day for us to walk around. So, you can enjoy it for us!
  • Not what I thought the visit of a chateau would be but extremely interesting as it is very well documented everywhere you explore. Beware, going up and down the tunnels can be exhausting so you need to be in a reasonable good shape before attempting the visit. The building itself doesn’t take much time but some of the painted panels on the walls and the ceilings are worth seeing. The moats are incredibly deep.
  • Interesting château with extensive underground tunnels, you can take your dog too but you must carry it through the interiors.
  • Castle has impressive underground terrains to explore, dungeons, corridors, wine cellars, one of the biggest of this type in Europe.
  • Worth a trip out for a few hours if you're in the area. The underground sections are very interesting, nice shop at the end to get some locally produced wine.
