Create an itinerary including Chateau de Breteuil
This charming castle, Chateau de Breteuil, is located in the Chevreuse valley and is a wonderful site to spend day exploring its historical treasures and blooming gardens. Built in the 17th century, the chateau has belonged to the Marquis de Breteuil since 1712. As you wander the halls and rooms, you can view classic pieces of furniture along with 50 waxworks from the Musée Grévin. Meanwhile, the 18th century decoration includes Gobelins tapestries, royal Swedish tableware, and paintings of French kings. The masterpiece of the chateau is the "table de Teschen", encrusted with 128 precious stones.

Outside Chateau de Breteuil, you will find a collection of French and English gardens and mazes, one of which created from 1,000 box plants. If you’re looking for a bit more history, check out the rooms exhibiting the Perrault tales, which reflect everyday life of the past. • Wonderful place. We had a sweet docent who spoke some English. Interesting history, excellent presentations and a must-visit if you’re in the region. Lovely gardens to explore on a beautiful day.

  • Entrance just for the garden and park is around 11€. I recommend having a walk in the park (around 1h). There are two ponds and quite a lot of birds.
  • The antithesis to our recent visit of Versilles!! Friendly & quiet, peaceful beautiful gardens, helpful & interesting guides & a real sense of a family residence open to the public. We were lucky & did meet the Marquis who gave us some history about the Chateu during our tour & then we chatted to him after our visit. A real thoughtful effort has been put into entertaining children, who would no doubt be bored by the tour very quickly otherwise. I found the early refrideration system particulary interesting in the kitchen!! I got a real sense of the hostory of the place from the furniture & artifacts which are genuine to the Chateu itself, often unlike in other places, which are an assembly of dispirate period pieces. So glad we stumbled accross this visit :)
  • Charming chateau, well maintained, wax figures, interesting, Mostly suitable for kids. Worth visiting.
  • Beautiful castle with amazing gardens, a kids playground and a picnic area with a food vendor.
  • Really nice visit. We were greeted by a member of the family who owns the chateau and given a quick rundown of the history there before doing the visit without the guide. There was plenty to take in and the wax figures in costume were a lovely addition. If not for the rain, we would have stayed longer for some crepes and more promenades...it would be very easy to spend an entire afternoon there and very well organized for kids' activities.
