Create an itinerary including Chateau de La Roche-Guyon
The tenth-century builders of Chateau de La Roche-Guyon dug the castle into a limestone cliff that overlooks the Seine. It was impossible to see the castle from the river, yet the castle had a wide view of the valley--making it an ideal defensive structure for medieval warfare. The manor house that stands today was built in the 12th century and continued to serve this purpose right up through World War II, when German Field Marshall Rommel made the castle his headquarters. Today, it serves as a museum with guided tours. Use our La Roche-Guyon route planner to arrange your visit to Chateau de La Roche-Guyon and other attractions in La Roche-Guyon.

  • An interesting French chateau with caves hewn into the cliff where German munitions were stored during WWII. The town and river are very picturesque.

  • We spent a lovely morning in this sleepy village as part of a Viking River Cruise. We loved it. We toured the garden, and climbed to the top of the medieval keep.

  • Great visit to the Chateau, we decided last minute to visit it rather than Bizy on our way leaving Giverny and heading back to Paris. It was very uncrowded and very unique built into a cliff side...

  • Great town to visit. Quiet and relaxing. Good also for climbing lovers on the way to the tower The Castle is authentic and very well preserved.Right now there is a comics exposition going. Good to visit
  • We liked the small town. Staris in the castle are challenging, but if you can make it, the view is amazing.
  • This idyllic castle located on the banks of the Seine is certainly worth a visit and is on top of my list of the most beautiful castles in the North of France. Although the inside wasn't as exciting as the outside - a lot of the rooms were empty and the exhibition left little to the imagination - there were lots of interesting architectural features and exciting caves and towers to explore. I think if they had the budget, this castle could truly be an amazing visit - but for now, the price wasn't very high (I paid around 5 euros for a student ticket) so you get what you paid for. I hope that somewhere in the future they would make some awesome exhibitions and make it a little bit more fun.
  • Massive mansion with ancient tower on top of chalk tunnels built into a cliff. Rommel stored ammunition in the tunnels in WW2. The access to the tower is closed until December 2019 so we did not get to the top. It was almost empty when we visited on a Wednesday. The salon rooms had an art installation in them and were a little hard to find the entrance to as the doors were closed and we appeared to startle the staff. The best views were from the steps and the pigeon loft. Free parking near the river were we had a baguette, cheese and salami lunch on the base of the old river crossing which i guess was by barge from the looks of the remains.
  • It is one of the most interesting castle I have ever seen. All the ages it saw are still there: from the first humans to the 2nd World War. If you have very young kids, consider that the stairs to the top are very high and holding them, quite difficult to do.
