  • This is the battlefield where Sir John Monash's innovative tactics prevailed and changed the course of WW1. My grandfather fought here, so it was a must-see. It's so calm and peaceful and serene...

  • This place is a reminder of the not only the will of man, but also the horrors of war where old men who never fired a shot sent their best and young to fight. As a veteran myself, I found this place to be moving and emotional, thank you to the locals who have kept this place as stark, beautiful, and eerie memorial to the both Commonwealth, and German troops and airmen that died here. Of note is the trenches which you can walk through to get an idea of the level of battle here (this made me emotional). Also this is the final resting place of the Red Baron (German WW1 Luftwaffe Ace 80 kills). If you like me are Australian, you may also notice the Aussie flag flying alongside the French flag. A MUST visit for the area!
  • Amazing and important zpot during the First World War. Can't imagine the hard fighting that took place here. Must visit when you're in the region.
  • The memorial to the Australian Corps is built on what was once, a century ago, part of the German front line trenches. On 4th July 1918, the Australian Corps, supported by American infantry and British tanks, took those trenches in what was a masterfully co-ordinated attacked planned by Lt-General John Monash. Today, the simple but imposing memorial is in open farmland with a wide, sweeping view of the Somme countryside. As you walk from the large car park, along a footpath through the fields, you will pass a series of informative panels describing in great detail the build-up, execution and aftermath of the battle. It's all nicely laid out, extremely interesting and well worth a visit.
  • A very special place for those of us interested in Australia's part in WW1. Very serene and quite moving
  • Veey moving, loved finding the wild poppies on the edge of the field.
