Gallivant with your children in the realm of faeries at Chateau du Rivau, an authentic medieval fortress surrounded by 14 gardens adorned with 450 varieties of fragrant roses. A popular tourist attraction today, the rich history of this castle includes a visit by Joan of Arc. Situated only ten minutes from the town of Chinon, the castle, the stables, and the six hectare (14.8 acre) park combine botany, history, art, and magic. Admire the sculptures on the outdoor grounds, visit the garden restaurant, or enjoy a number of medieval themed activities. An on-site flower bar in the garden serves drinks made from herbs and flowers inspired by the ancients. • This is an unusual chateau in as much as it has been renovated only in the last 30 years and in a manner which combines the ancient & the modern. For the purists, it’s probably not going to tick all.....  more

  • A lovely little Château with lots to see for all the family. Art and sculptures; gardens; mazes and installations all make for an interesting visit. On a good day, lunch at the courtyard restaurant is a must. Recommended.
  • Beautiful chateau and garden's spoilt by too much "clever" art. Sadly we couldn't get anything to eat or drink in the terrace restaurant as it was fully booked and under staffed. Shame that we weren't informed that we needed to book when we bought our entry tickets two hours earlier. ☹️
  • A joy to visit. The gardens were lovely with some wonderful, original sculptures. Great for children and adults. Inside the castle there is a really great exhibition with a fantastic, eclectic, imaginative and humourous collection. Lots of interesting and funny details that one has to look for as they are mixed in with the more serious stuff. Yet again, very entertaining for all ages. Definitely worth a visit. Make sure you have plenty of time to go everywhere. There's a restaurant or you can take a picnic.
  • Fantastic place to visit with children. The gardens are very, very well designed. My 5 year old loved exploring them. They were magical. The art on display in the château is very interesting. Not to everyone's tastes. Half of our group loved it and the other half not so much. I thought it was brilliant. Overall, a great way to spend a few hours. Would definitely recommend.
  • If you see one Chateau during a visit to the Loire make it this one. It's got a beautiful garden, lots of fun things to keep children happy and the chateau itself is not too big. There is a boutique hotel there, (great place for a wedding), restaurant and of course....a gift shop.
