While archeological evidence shows people have lived on this site for thousands of years, Chateau de Commarque was built sometime in the early 12th century. Situated on a cliff for defensive purposes, the castle has changed hands--and nationalities--several times over the centuries. One of the original lord's descendants now owns it and has restored the grounds. Take a self or guided tour through the ruins, and peek in on the seasonal workshops that relate to some of the castle's important periods. • We loved this place and spent three hours total exploring the ruins. The castle has been brought back to life with a lot of love and many details have been added to tell about its past and the people who lived there. The whole place almost comes to life! Especially the caves and information on murals were interesting. Beautiful views around the valley, you can even go up to the tower. Can highly recommend this for history lovers!
  • This castle was founded in the 12th century or so and its primary function back then was to protect the abbey. It’s tower back then was wood but later changed to stone keeps. The castle has been under renovations since the early 90s and continues today. It’s definitely a place to go see if you are in the area. It’s a beautiful sight to see but you do have to do a lot of walking.
  • Impressive!!! They did a great job maintaining the castle and not taking away the original remains. It's quite bit so take your time to go through each area. Do not miss climbing to the top tower and the 360 view is incredible!!! I'd recommend going no later than 4 during November since it gets dark real fast. High recommend it!
  • Good history, beautiful place. Staff tried to talk English, but was okay. The guide we bought was unfortunately in France instead of English like they said. But overal beautiful place, with history for not a expensive price 8,80 euros and you spend like an hour and half there
  • Excellent! Forget the dreadful Chateau Puymatin and spend your time and money here instead. We spent several hours slowly making our way to the top of the tower. The man in the ticket booth was helpful and a real down to earth French man. Signage/information has the right level of detail. Interesting ruins restored well and the ancient cave art presentation was an added bonus (alas not possible to go into the caves). The owner deserves congratulations for his time, money and effort. He has obviously considered it historically and holistically... a remote car park to preserve views, the 600m walk through the woods (as people would have done back when it was in use), the first magnificent view as you turn the corner, even the photo opportunity with running water in the foreground and castle on the hill. Fantastic value and brilliant experience. Don't miss it unless you hate walking.
