Create an itinerary including Chateau d'If
An impressive castle, Chateau d'If was the setting for Alexandre Dumas' adventure novel "The Count of Monte Cristo." This three-story building is 28 m (91 ft) high, situated on an island, and bordered by three towers with large gun embrasures. The castle never weathered an actual attack, though, and was eventually transformed into a prison. French Protestants were sent there in the early 19th century. The castle was converted into a public museum in 1890. It can now be reached by boat from Marseille's old port. For travelers who use our online itinerary creator, Marseille holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Chateau d'If and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • Just a bucket list thing for me. I've read the count of Monte cristo so many times. It was wonderful to be there. It helped that we had beautiful weather too!

  • Worth seeing former prison island with an impressive fort. The shipping there doesn't take so much time and it's very nice. Like the island itself you can enjoy real Mediterranean atmosphere.
  • You can not go to Marseille or southern France without visiting the Château d'If. If you are a literature fan, history fan, or just love seeing the sights, this is where you want to be.
  • If you are a fan of works by Alexandre Dumas, This is a must visit! They even named one cell after Edmond Dantes and another one after Abbe Faria (from the Count of Monte Cristo). Entry fee is 6 euros, but they're usually sold with the ferry round trip tickets from Marseilles old port, around 16 euros in total.
  • A rare opportunity for this castle visit on an island from Marseille. We were welcomed by friendly staff. We visited the souvenir shop, patronised and assisted by very friendly and helpful staff.
  • First time last Saturday to visit the Chateau after 3 years here in Marseille!! Worth it and interesting trip by ferry boat have a quick tour and a drink later then on our way back we were lucky to see the sunset after visiting Frioul island 🏝 make sure to do this trip while ur time at Marseille. You gonna love it 🥰
