Create an itinerary including Abbaye de Fontenay
One of the oldest and most completely intact Cistercian abbeys in Europe, Abbaye de Fontenay was built in 1118 with a mixture of Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles. Although slightly rundown, the original complex comprising the church, dormitory, cloister, chapter house, caldarium, dovecote, and forge all retain their original architecture, except the refectory. • Just wandering in the grounds was an experience, but the buildings were very old and atmospheric. Well worth a visit

  • What a great place to visit if you are around. It is beautiful and we could see the really take care of everything, during our visit it was possible to see some employees working around. We had a blast, definitely a must go in Burgundy!
  • Worth a look if in the area, it's just over an hour from Beaune, beautifully kept and very interesting. Spent just over an hour there, entry is 11 euros. Refreshments on site by way of vending machines and there are toilets. Lovely gift shop at the exit.
  • Absolutely stunning! It really worth going inside and spend peaceful time in the area of large monastery where 200 monks have lived during its greatest times. Partially preserved and largely rennovated monastery. Privately held by the relatives of Montgolfier family. TIP: don’t miss replica of hydraulic forge from 12th century - first of its kind in Europe.
  • In this sacred place you can breathe a magical atmosphere. The Abbey retains its medieval aspect. If you can go and visit it you will not be disappointed!!
  • Beautifully situated, well kept sobre yet elegant abbey. Tours in French but multilingual handouts are available. Entrance price is somewhat steep (€11). Don’t miss Europe’s oldest hydraulical hammer in the smithy!
