Create an itinerary including Abbaye de Fontfroide
Now a winery, farm, bookstore, and restaurant, Abbaye de Fontfroide is a former Cistercian monastery. The building's facade features classic Gothic style, and the choir has been called the Parthenon of the French Gothic. Examine the ornately carved wooden doors, an elaborate astronomical clock, tapestries from the 15th and 17th centuries, and famous stained-glass windows from the 13th, 14th, and 16th centuries. Some of the stained glass illustrate the elusive transitional stage between the Gothic and Renaissance artistic styles. • If you love history and architecture this should be a must place to visit. We spent about an hour touring through this place. There is a pay to enter side and a free side that asks for a donation...

  • Not much I can add to all the previous reviews. Beautiful, serene, for sure worth a visit, be it with a guide or without.

  • Gloriously peaceful. Quite an amazing place. We were lucky enough to be serenaded by ancient orchestra warming up for evening concert. Very interesting place with good signposting of what's what. Lovely gardens in a beautiful valley.
  • One of the best abbeys i've ever seen. We arrived there in the afternoon after visiting Carcassonne. The abbey is completely surrounded by greenery. Windows' church are breathtaking. Strongly recommended.
  • Really beautiful and worth visiting. Staff is super friendly and also very well maintained property.
  • A wonderful place to visit. A combination of extraordinary things to do and see. During our several visits, we have eaten at the restaurant several times. The food is fantastic. The setting is superb. And the staff both attentive and helpful. Last year, we had Easter dinner followed by a wonderful concert of Gregoria’s Chants in the beautifully restore church. The grounds have wonderful gardens, many paths to hike, a rose garden par excellence, etc. this abbey is a must to visit. Plan on several hours to fully enjoy the experience.
  • We recommend doing a wine tasting here (for free, 30 mins, 3 wines). And then take the self guided tour. The place is outstanding beautiful and for me as a white wine drinker it’s so far the only red wine in southern France that I really enjoyed. The medieval architecture is simply outstanding and beyond words!
