Abbaye d'Hautecombe is the burial place for the family from the House of Savoy, and later for a French king. It was originally built in 1125 as a monastery for the Cistercian order. Both Pope Celestine IV and Pope Nicolas III are said to have been monks here, but this was never proven. The building was also used as a fabric-printing factory in the 18th century. Its various designs take their influence from different eras and architects, so you will see a collage of architectural ideas depending on which portion of the monastery you’re touring. Most notable are the lighthouse abutting the water and the Gothic-Roman church restored in 1824. You’ll also be impressed by the sheer number of statues that adorn the interior of the church, 300 to be exact. We got there at 5:30 when they had just closed so we couldn’t see inside the building or 3/4 of the outside (due to locked gates). But we were able to see part of the waterfront and the metal mining..... more

We did not want a tour so absolutely nothing to see. Don't expect views over the lake, no gardens, nothing of interest.

Absolutely stunning. The people are friendly and the audio guides are amazing. You can spend a couple of hours here experiencing the calmness and history of this magical Abbaye.

Stunning architecture and amazing nature view around it. This abbaye has been sitting peacefully by the lake since 12th century. Interior design is spectacular. Ceilings and majority of the building are in style of Baroque, a few corners in style of Neoclassicism. There's a entry fee of €4.5. Audio guide device and introduction sheet (option of several languages, which I find it rare in France, very international tourist friendly) are available. Very worthwhile to pay a visit.

Beautiful church to be visited at the Abbey. Small museum free of charge near the lake. The rest of the Abbey can not be visited (without tour?) as a congregation is still present at the site.
